Our Projects

We have been working on many interesting projects recently, here are a few highlights.

Robotic Structural Optimisation

Garmac was commissioned to enhance the structural efficiency of a sophisticated, cable crawling robotic system, primarily aiming to achieve a weight reduction of over 30% and an increase in stiffness by more than 50%.

Through a thorough analysis of the current design, Garmac considered various complex composite manufacturing techniques to guarantee success.

Our approach began with topology optimisation, strategically defining the structure to minimise stress concentrations. Subsequently, we selected appropriate manufacturing processes and designed moulds to bring the design to life.

This iterative process was applied to the primary structure of the robot, surpassing the client's initial requirements and yielding exceptional results.

Wing Spar Optimisation

Garmac utilises the Hyperworks Suite by Altair to develop conceptual designs for composite wing spars.
The goal is to strategically design and enhance the placement and form of the spar within the wing, including optimizing the spar's cross-sectional shape, thickness, and laminate schedule across the entire span of the wing.
The project enabled a comprehensive cost assessment of the concept and significantly shortened the time to production by minimizing iterations in the preliminary and detailed design phases.
This achievement underscores Garmac's success and emphasized the substantial value that Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) can contribute to a business.

3D printing / Rapid Prototyping

Garmac can offer additive  manufacturing in-house using a CreatBot PEEK-300 3D Printer, which facilitates the printing of high-temperature materials such as PEEK. This capability empowers the rapid prototyping of components characterized by exceptional strength and stiffness, surpassing the working temperature limitations of conventional 3D printed materials. This not only allows for the additive manufacturing of a final product but also facilitates the incorporation of preliminary system testing using swiftly produced prototype components.

By harnessing this advanced additive manufacture and rapid prototyping capability, Garmac has added significant value to client projects. The expanded range of possibilities provided by this cutting-edge technology enhances the overall value proposition, ensuring that Garmac remains at the forefront of delivering innovative solutions and meeting the diverse needs of its clients.
